The Ediacaran from the Moldova-Podillya basin (2nd stop)

Our second stop during the joint field trip was at the eastern entrance of the Otaci village, Ocnița district (yellow mark). Unfortunately, due to the current events in Ukraine, we decided not to pass the border and see the Ediacaran outcrops from the left side of the Dniester river. Perhaps next year...

The exposed sedimentary sequence consists of the lower, middle and upper parts of the Bernashivka Member, and the lower part of the Bronnytsya Member (Yaryshiv Formation).

The lower part of the Bernashivka Member is represented by yellowish massive sandstones. The middle part consists of an alternation between argillites and siltstones. The argillites represent the predominant lithology. Additionally, this interval is enriched in Ediacaran fauna and also contains a bentonite layer. The upper part of the Bernashivka is characterized by greyish sandstones.

The lower part of the Bronnytsya Member consists of red, occasionally green tuffaceous argillites.
