PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The late Ediacaran – early Cambrian (Proterozoic – Phanerozoic) transition is a topic that cannot be easily studied since there is a lack of such preserved outcrops on a global scale. In the past decades, the study of these deposits has seen an increase in focus.
Researchers are interested in the implementation of different types of investigations on the Ediacaran – Cambrian sediments in order to correlate them with other deposits of the same age from different regions, and to understand the global palaeoconditions at the boundary between these two periods.

The objectives of the present project are:
Objective 1: Detailed interdisciplinary study (lithology, sedimentology, geochemistry, geochronology and paleontology) of the upper Ediacaran – lower Cambrian succession from the Moldova-Podillya Basin and correlation with similar/synchronous successions from
Baltica.
Objective 2: Reconstruction of the depositional environment of the upper Ediacaran – lower Cambrian succession based on borehole data and correlation with surface data.
Objective 3: Analyses of the upper Ediacaran – lower Cambrian boundary.

As a results of collaboration with foreign colleagues, the boundary of this study has been moved to include the entire Paleozoic Era.
